Chinese newspaper “Kwong Wah Yi Poh” date 31/07/2010 headlined the news of Wat Sungai Siput for the Ubosot building fund raising programme on the front page of “Kedah . Perlis” edition. Many thanks to “Kwong Wah Yi Poh” for the kind reporting, it is much appreciated. Khao Phansa at Wat Sungai Siput indeed was a beautiful night where all the candles light up the dark and turn the heart as bright as the light of candle and as beautiful as the night of Wat Sungai Siput. The event started with chanting and it took up most of the time, besides chanting, Archan Tia as the abbot of Wat Sungai Siput also did reporting and announcement to the devotees for the financial statement and also other relevance matters to the temple. After the reporting he also gave advise to his student monk for the rules and restrictions and also guide the student monk and devotees how to do meditation, we then spent about 10 minutes practicing meditation inside the hall. It is necessary for an abbot of the temple to guide the other monks and devotees on how to follow the way of Buddha teaching at the night of Khao Phansa. After that it was a series of chanting session again then only follows by light up the candle and surrounding the temple in circle for 3 times, the circling done with sticking the bundle of flowers, joss stick and candle into the small sand dune in front of temple, as you can see from the picture.

The ritual was done smoothly without being interrupted by a single drop of water, simply amazing. It was a simple but meaningful night of Wat Sungai Siput where it marks the beginning of 3 months period’s Phansa. I’m happy to have participated into such event, a truly remarkable day of my life.

空怀泰佛寺的“守夏节”仪式在昨晚顺利完成。仪式开始为诵经,间中阿占爹师傅也教导他的和尚徒弟们比如说要如何守戒,还教大家要如何的坐禅,这是仪式中最重要的一个环节之一,身为空怀泰佛寺的主持,阿占爹师傅有责任要把佛陀的教诲传给大家。但大多数的讲解以泰语传送,因为当天出席的善信们有95% 都是当地的暹人居民。诵经在“守夏节”的整个仪式中占据了大部分的时间,最后才是由师傅点燃蜡烛带领着大家环绕庙寺3圈,这也称为巡烛仪式,也是仪式的最高潮。阿占爹跟大家说,在环绕庙寺时要行 “步禅”,心中要念 “Phut-Tho”,第二圈跟第三圈也要各默念其咒语(我暂时忘了第二圈跟第三圈的咒语)。最后是把握在手中的花以及香烛插在堆积在庙寺前的小沙丘上,然后阿占爹师傅再为大家做最后一次的诵经,整个“守夏节”仪式才算完成。空怀泰佛寺的“守夏节” 仪式说起来应该是有受到老天的眷属,因为过午后就一直下雨直到4点多时雨才停,仪式完毕后30分钟,正当我要回家时又开始下起雨来。
简单但庄严,美丽不奢华,空怀泰佛寺的这一夜是最漂亮的,在一片橙黄色的烛光笼罩下,佛陀时期的足迹又再次的在这边重新出现。每人手中握着一根蜡烛,所踩出去的每一步都是在净化自己的心灵,大家一起追随着佛陀的脚步,用烛光照亮了前路,坚守佛规,重振精神的培训,以苦行开悟为最终目标来开始这为期三个月的“守夏节”。

It was raining cat & dog early in the afternoon and stopped around 4pm, and 20 minutes after the ritual finished, at 10PM the moment I look at the clock when I about to go home, it started to rain again. The ritual was done smoothly without being interrupted by a single drop of water, simply amazing. It was a simple but meaningful night of Wat Sungai Siput where it marks the beginning of 3 months period’s Phansa. I’m happy to have participated into such event, a truly remarkable day of my life.

看到大家不断的为空怀泰佛寺而做出努力的帮忙以及贡献,实在是感动加于感激。大家不分彼此,不顾个人的利益,自费时间跟金钱帮忙筹备讲经堂的经费,尤其是要赞美年轻的一代们,这种高尚的精神在现今的社会上已经非常罕见。原来为佛教的付出不但可以为自己以及家人集公德,也可以紧紧的把大家拉在一起,让我们看到了希望之光,人性善美的一面。看来阿占爹努力发展空怀泰佛寺是一件对的事情,之前大家可能只对他的圣物感兴趣,现在大家可以一起参与并把佛教发扬光大,把善的种子散播到下一代去,这种精神实在是另人敬佩,这种行为才是绝对的最好开运方式!
空怀泰佛寺是属于大家的家,在这里我们都受到了法喜的滋润,加强了我们的人格,开启了我们的智慧,让大家可以更建全的成长,是一个绝对的善地。当然这世界上没有绝对100%完美的东西,钻牛角尖的只会更加的愚昧自己,阿占爹曾经说过,没有一次性就完美的东西,唯有透过互相的努力方可得到最佳的结果。阿占爹是个高僧,但内心绝对不会设立一道墙来跟大家做隔离,反而会放下姿态会跟大家一样一起学习,一起发展空怀泰佛寺,把正宗佛教的精髓发扬光大,让更多人可以受到佛陀的教诲。阿占爹也曾经说过,我既然当了和尚,也就可以放下一切,我大可走进森林不问尘世,努力的自我修行,但这样做只会对我自己带来益处,而不会让更多的人可以受惠。佛牌,经文纹身,各种改运/增运仪式当然不会是转自于正宗佛教,佛陀根本就没有教我们这些法门,但如果没有利用这些东西来帮助别人度过困境,试问又要如何的介绍佛教给人家认识呢?如果一个正在面临困难的善信找你时,你什么都不做只教他坐禅颂经,你认为他们会接受吗?佛陀说过,不要一味的盲目往前走,而要依照当时的情况而做出适当调整,这样才是上策,才是智慧。阿占爹说,我当了20几年的和尚,穿了20几年佛陀的衣服,我是要还他的,你以为我穿他的袈裟是因为漂亮吗?呵呵。
多年来大家都把泰国高僧们看成制造拥有不可思议力量的佛牌工具,很少人会深入的去了解并解剖他们的内心世界以及他们对佛教的付出与展望,大家只对他们的事迹或圣物感到兴趣,导致他们往往都徘回在于表面上,无法深入的让大家体会到其衷心以及用心良苦。最后再次的感谢大家多年来对空怀泰佛寺的付出与支持,希望大家可以继续的努力把空怀泰佛寺的精神散播下去,让更多的人可以受惠其中。祝,安康。

Temple donation envelope is another way making contribution to Wat Sungai Siput. Temple envelope has been widely used in most of the Wat (Siam temple) where devotee get the chances to contribute in the amount that afforded by them, there is no limits on how much you can donate its all based on your heart, because the merit of donating RM1 from poor person is equivalent to RM10K from a wealthy person.
I remember I received my first envelope from Archan Tia in 3 years ago, and the amount I donated is just RM50, follow by the “Phapa” on year 2007, I use RM50 to present the Kasaya to other monk on that event and another RM50 to buy an amulet, I contributed RM150 in total but I did helped to distribute the envelope to my family and friends and collected few more hundred, I gathered it and present to Archan Tia on the day of “Phapa”. You see, im not afraiding of letting you to know that how much I donated because like I said it’s all based on your heart and your ability, I know it wasn’t enough because my contribution alone is just 1/6667 from the grand amount of RM1000000 that needed to build that Ubosot. But that’s all I can afford and I did that happily because I know I have did my part and its kind of responsibility that each and every living human being on this society must do to contribute back to something that you have “used” in the past. Through out these years I keep donating to the temple when its ok for me, I did not ask anything for return and I didn’t even ask for receipt! All I do is simply to help, no question asked, no hesitating and no regret. But I did earned something in return throughout these years from Archan Tia, that’s happiness, and improving on personality, I have grown wise, that’s something you cannot learn else where, lot of laughs and no, we did not shed tears together because there is no sadness and negative thought under the big umbrella of Buddha!
So for those who want to do envelope donation please visit Wat Sungai Siput and get the envelope by yourself, please do that before 8/31 and also please help distribute it to your family and friends if possible. 多年来我都在尽我的内力范围以内把钱塞进信封里,或帮忙把信封递给有缘人,为的就是要尽自己的一份力量,虽然数目不多但是尽了力就好。我也从不要求任何的回报,但努力的向阿占爹师傅学习,这些年来我不知不觉的增长了好多东西,比如增长智慧,开心以及不再执著,我相信这远比增长银行账簿里的数目来得珍贵,说得俗一点,那可是前往天堂的积分啊,呵呵。

Monday, July 26, 2010 is the day of Khao Phansa event for Wat Sungai Siput. Khao Phansa aka “Candle Festival”. As the seasonal monsoon rains descend over the kingdom, it marks the beginning of the Buddhist "rain retreat" and the Buddhist Lent, or "Phansa", during which all Buddhist monks retreat to the temples. This is also an auspicious time for Buddhist ordinations as it marks a period of spiritual renewal.
Known as "Khao Phansa", the Buddhist Lent is a time devoted to study and meditation. Buddhist monks remain within the temple grounds and do not venture out for a period of three months starting from the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month (in July) to the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month (in October). Stories of the Buddhist Rains Retreat can be traced back to the beginning of the Buddhist era. At that time, the Lord Buddha saw that monks wandering outside the temple compound might damage growing crops or accidentally kill insects, so he proclaimed that it would be better for the monks to observe the teachings and practice meditation at the monasteries instead.
Buddhism, Buddhist traditions and beliefs are central forces that shape the local way of life and give rise to various festivals of religious origin which have been observed for generations. For example, the majority of the Buddhist ordinations take place during the Buddhist Lent when young novices enter the monkhood. Villagers also actively engage in merit-making during this period. Offerings consisting of an assortment of savoury dishes and sweets as well as items for daily use are offered to monks. Items that provide light such as candles, lanterns and lamp oil are deemed to be particularly important offerings as it is believed that they provide monks with illumination physically and spiritually.
The event of Khao Phansa for Wat Sungai Siput is on Monday, July 26, 2010, time is 8PM at night. You must prepare the flower, candle (white or yellow) and joss stick, it will be start with chanting ritual in lomtam follow by surrounding the whole area of Wat Sungai Siput by holding the flower, candle and joss stick. It should be nice to have the opportunity to participate into such event, do not miss it if you are free on that night!
守夏节亦称坐守居节、入夏节、入雨节等。在此期间,佛教僧侣留在一个地方,通常在他们的寺院。应在寺内坐禅修学,接受供养。这段时间称为雨安居期,禁止僧尼外出在一些寺庙. 守夏节前,僧侣要清扫寺院和僧舍。守夏节之日,全寺僧人举行入夏安居仪式,礼佛诵经并诵念“贫道将在此寺守夏安居三个月”三遍。然后一般僧人向高僧忏悔过失。之后,各寺院和僧人互送鲜花、香烛互致敬意和忏悔。仪式后,僧人开始安居修学。守夏节早晨,平民百姓普遍到寺院施斋,所施斋饭除新鲜饭食菜餚外,还有传统糕点蕉叶兹粑。同时奉献蜡烛丛及甘蔗水、糖、牙刷、牙膏、肥皂、浴巾等日用品。并且制作可燃三个月之久而不熄的巨大蜡烛,敲锣打鼓送到寺庙,供僧人在守夏节诵经时使用。傍晚,人们手持鲜花和点燃的蜡烛,在寺院举行隆重的巡烛仪式,守夏节活动达到高潮。在守夏节期间,许多善男信女将出家三个月,或天天聆听僧侣诵经,或在家中持守佛律八戒,示对佛教的虔诚。在守夏节,许多佛教信徒重振精神的培训,採取更加苦行的做法,如放弃肉类,酒精,或吸烟。
据说这种仪式源于古印度人,每当雨季到来他们就停止去其它地方,如有游历在外的泰国人牞在哪里碰到雨季就在那里停留三个月,雨停了继续行进,这样很不方便。即使是三藐三佛陀尊者(对佛陀的敬称),他们要去各个地方游历,一到雨季他们也会按自己的意愿停止游历。这和作为一个三藐三佛陀尊者应有的行为是一致的,但是没有必要把这作为一个风俗习惯,也没有佛祖规定僧侣们要守夏。
直到后来僧侣越来越多,有一回佛祖居住在玉舍城(古印度摩提陀国首府),有六个和尚没有固定的地方居住,即使是雨季他们也要去游历,踩踏农民的庄稼,草木和许多小动物,以至人们都说:“即使是异教徒(佛教以外的)都懂得在雨季以后停止游历;鸟在下雨的时候也懂得做窝避雨,但是为什么僧侣们一年到头都要到处去游历踩踏许多活生生的草木和杀害许多小生物?”这些话传到了佛祖的耳朵里,佛祖就规定:每年雨季的三个月里僧侣们一定要住在一个固定的地方,停止游历,也就是阴历的8月16日至11月中旬,这一时期叫做守夏期。
在泰国这是最重要的佛教传统节日,大部分商店都关闭,夜总会不会出售酒。有点像庆祝中国新年,每个人都放假回家。他们传统的蜡烛游行到庙裡 。这种蜡烛游行穿过市中心的花车,伴随着各自的代表机构, 舞者,或音乐家通常穿着传统的服饰。
空怀泰佛寺的守夏节仪式定在2010年7月26号,星期一的晚上八点。善信们要自备鲜花3朵,黄/白烛以及香一把。仪式开始为诵经,诵经完毕后阿占爹就会带领大家拿着花朵,蜡烛以及香环绕佛寺,也称为巡烛仪式。当天有空的善信们不妨前来参加这项鲜为人知的活动,经历一下传自佛陀时代就进行的仪式,对于佛教徒来说其意义应该深长。
Known as "Khao Phansa", the Buddhist Lent is a time devoted to study and meditation. Buddhist monks remain within the temple grounds and do not venture out for a period of three months starting from the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month (in July) to the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month (in October). Stories of the Buddhist Rains Retreat can be traced back to the beginning of the Buddhist era. At that time, the Lord Buddha saw that monks wandering outside the temple compound might damage growing crops or accidentally kill insects, so he proclaimed that it would be better for the monks to observe the teachings and practice meditation at the monasteries instead.
Buddhism, Buddhist traditions and beliefs are central forces that shape the local way of life and give rise to various festivals of religious origin which have been observed for generations. For example, the majority of the Buddhist ordinations take place during the Buddhist Lent when young novices enter the monkhood. Villagers also actively engage in merit-making during this period. Offerings consisting of an assortment of savoury dishes and sweets as well as items for daily use are offered to monks. Items that provide light such as candles, lanterns and lamp oil are deemed to be particularly important offerings as it is believed that they provide monks with illumination physically and spiritually.
The event of Khao Phansa for Wat Sungai Siput is on Monday, July 26, 2010, time is 8PM at night. You must prepare the flower, candle (white or yellow) and joss stick, it will be start with chanting ritual in lomtam follow by surrounding the whole area of Wat Sungai Siput by holding the flower, candle and joss stick. It should be nice to have the opportunity to participate into such event, do not miss it if you are free on that night!
守夏节亦称坐守居节、入夏节、入雨节等。在此期间,佛教僧侣留在一个地方,通常在他们的寺院。应在寺内坐禅修学,接受供养。这段时间称为雨安居期,禁止僧尼外出在一些寺庙. 守夏节前,僧侣要清扫寺院和僧舍。守夏节之日,全寺僧人举行入夏安居仪式,礼佛诵经并诵念“贫道将在此寺守夏安居三个月”三遍。然后一般僧人向高僧忏悔过失。之后,各寺院和僧人互送鲜花、香烛互致敬意和忏悔。仪式后,僧人开始安居修学。守夏节早晨,平民百姓普遍到寺院施斋,所施斋饭除新鲜饭食菜餚外,还有传统糕点蕉叶兹粑。同时奉献蜡烛丛及甘蔗水、糖、牙刷、牙膏、肥皂、浴巾等日用品。并且制作可燃三个月之久而不熄的巨大蜡烛,敲锣打鼓送到寺庙,供僧人在守夏节诵经时使用。傍晚,人们手持鲜花和点燃的蜡烛,在寺院举行隆重的巡烛仪式,守夏节活动达到高潮。在守夏节期间,许多善男信女将出家三个月,或天天聆听僧侣诵经,或在家中持守佛律八戒,示对佛教的虔诚。在守夏节,许多佛教信徒重振精神的培训,採取更加苦行的做法,如放弃肉类,酒精,或吸烟。
据说这种仪式源于古印度人,每当雨季到来他们就停止去其它地方,如有游历在外的泰国人牞在哪里碰到雨季就在那里停留三个月,雨停了继续行进,这样很不方便。即使是三藐三佛陀尊者(对佛陀的敬称),他们要去各个地方游历,一到雨季他们也会按自己的意愿停止游历。这和作为一个三藐三佛陀尊者应有的行为是一致的,但是没有必要把这作为一个风俗习惯,也没有佛祖规定僧侣们要守夏。
直到后来僧侣越来越多,有一回佛祖居住在玉舍城(古印度摩提陀国首府),有六个和尚没有固定的地方居住,即使是雨季他们也要去游历,踩踏农民的庄稼,草木和许多小动物,以至人们都说:“即使是异教徒(佛教以外的)都懂得在雨季以后停止游历;鸟在下雨的时候也懂得做窝避雨,但是为什么僧侣们一年到头都要到处去游历踩踏许多活生生的草木和杀害许多小生物?”这些话传到了佛祖的耳朵里,佛祖就规定:每年雨季的三个月里僧侣们一定要住在一个固定的地方,停止游历,也就是阴历的8月16日至11月中旬,这一时期叫做守夏期。
在泰国这是最重要的佛教传统节日,大部分商店都关闭,夜总会不会出售酒。有点像庆祝中国新年,每个人都放假回家。他们传统的蜡烛游行到庙裡 。这种蜡烛游行穿过市中心的花车,伴随着各自的代表机构, 舞者,或音乐家通常穿着传统的服饰。

Amulet created by Luang Phor Top (Wat Pra Buddhabartchondan) himself on 2505 using the betelnut that he chewed. The purpose of creating this batch of amulet is for the fundraising programme. Number created not known, but accordingly to Archan Tia, his master usually don’t make amulet in huge number, he prefers 20, 50, 99 or at most 500 pcs.

The following story of LP Thep Lok Udorn was told by Archan Tia in hokkien, memorized down by me and written down in both the English and Chinese version with the help of other devotee for correcting the grammar and sentences. They are real story happened when Archan Tia stayed with him in the cave for 5 days back to the days when Archan Tia still a forest monk.

It’s all begins with that long needless that Archan Tia use it for acupuncturing to cured an old man recover from bad disease in 10 years ago... It so happened that when Archan Tia came to Pendang, Malaysia 10 years ago to soliciting money for his temple in Thailand, he met an old man with many years of pain on his legs, Archan Tia help him by performing Thai style ancient acupuncture therapeutic on that man, and after few times of healing process, amazingly that many years bad disease successfully cured. He then received a piece of rubber estate land in Kampong Sungai Siput from that old man who happened to be the local's landlord as the sign of appreciation.
I don’t really know exactly how to call that thing but the process look like the combination of Chinese acupuncture and Thai style spiritual tattoo, with the herd oil on the head of needle, Archan Tia stick the needle repeatedly on the spot where the patient claimed to have pain on it. The process is very fast and for optimize results patients are advisely to come back after few weeks to let Archan Tia check and see weather there are any improvement. Personally I think this kind of medical therapy is working on the blood vessels and collaterals to remove the blocked inside plus the spiritual healing method from the chant that Archan Tia spell during the acupuncture process. Many have claimed that it works amazingly well for them, and you might want to give it a shot at Wat Sungai Siput if you have any bad disease that modern medical can’t help, best of all this services is completely FOC!
